From Tricia:
" i am determined to finish the altered book i started for olivia so i knew that i had to tie the artwords "memories" into her book. this was easy because already there was a page marked for olivia's first friend brittney who died in 2005 from a brain tumor. ohhh, they were so close, like sisters. and i have a terrible fear that olivia will forget her, all the fun times they had playing and not so fun times in the hospital, all the things she taught us. i am afraid that i will forget and yet sometimes it is hard to even think of the last months."

Topic #38--"Memory" Entry
From Patrick!:
this has been bouncing around my head for awhile...
i wish they were my words.
This may never start.
We could fall apart.
And I'd be your memory.
Lost your sense of fear.
Feelings insincere.
Can I be your memory?
So get back, back, back to where we lasted.
Just like I imagine.
I could never feel this way.
So get back, back, back to the disaster.
My heart's beating faster.
Holding on to feel the same.
This may never start.
I'll tear us apart.
Can I be your enemy?
Losing half a year.
Waiting for you here
I'd be your anything.
So get back, back, back to where we lasted.
Just like I imagine.
I could never feel this way.
So get back, back, back to the disaster.
My heart's beating faster.
Holding on to feel the same.
This may never start.
Tearing out my heart.
I'd be your memory.
Lost your sense of fear.
(I'd be your memory)
Feelings disappear.
Can I be your memory?
So get back, back, back to where we lasted.
Just like I imagine.
I could never feel this way.
So get back, back, back to the disaster.
My heart's beating faster.
Holding on to feel the same.
This may never start.
We could fall apart
And I'd be your memory.
Lost your sense of fear.
Feelings insincere.
Can I be your memory?
Can I be your memory?

North of Childhood; Altered Clocks
Somewhere ahead I see you
watching something out your window,
what I don’t know. You’re tall,
not on your tiptoes, green,
no longer yellow,
no longer little, little one,
but the changeless changing
seasons are still with us.
Summer’s back,
so beautiful it always reeks of ending,
and now its breeze is stirring
in your room commanding the lawn,
trying to wake you to say the day is wasting,
but you’re north of childhood now and out of here,
and I’ve gone south.

"my thoughts on memory.....I will always treasure the memories of my loved ones, they have left me with a thousand memories, I will forever hold them close to my heart" ~ Izabella
UNDER THE HARVEST MOON,
When the soft silver
Drips shimmering
Over the garden nights,
Death, the gray mocker,
Comes and whispers to you
As a beautiful friend
Who remembers.
Under the summer roses
When the flagrant crimson
Lurks in the dusk
Of the wild red leaves,
Love, with little hands,
Comes and touches you
With a thousand memories,
And asks you
Beautiful, unanswerable questions.

From Susan Ramey Cleveland!:
"Here is a spread I did in the Northwind Studio 2006/07 altered book round robin that perfectly fits that theme. The photo shows my mama and daddy back when mama was 19 and daddy was about 22. The original book was a photo album with black pages. The artist's theme was "Death," but not in a morbid kind of way. Rather "what happens when we die?" Since Mama and Daddy have both found the answer to that question now, I decided to use them. (Click on photos for larger views.)"

Topic #37--"Wind" Entry
From Tricia Scott!:
Tonight I sat with my journal upon my lap, a cup of water and my watercolors on the coffee table watching American Idol with my hubby and daughter. The wind is blowing pretty hard outside tonight which helped to inspire me despite the distractions of TV and laughing family.
The watercolors are fun and they are a new plaything. I have a book from long ago on the basics and I will pull that out soon and have a look though it is fun just to play and not worry if I am doing it right.
Next I added an image of a birdie (of course) and a vintage boy with a sweet lonesome face. I hope the circle behind his head looks like the moon-it came to be there because I messed up his crown. Oil pastels and charcoal were rubbed around here and there.
I found the quote and thought it fit as though I had planned it. Love it when that happens!
"And love went by upon the wind as though it had not been." Robert Graves

mixed media art squared on paper
price: 25 euros( shipping cost included)
this is also made for the artword challenge of the week: Wind
the writing says:
"so many flowers & no one to give them to maybe I'll become bitter & keep them for my tomb & the wind will take all my beauties away xxx"
The tree is in the wind, the torment of the wind, maybe the spiritual hurricanes again, coming to shake the evil out or to just to carry away the last hopes.
the stars are black for nothing shines anymore.
It's not desperate, it's almost realistic though very melancholic...I know if we look outside and even inside on some days we can see the ugliness everywhere, creeping in the meanders of this human existence.
I am not there to bring that philosophy of despair here, it was more venting ,creating as a solace.
I'll be okay in the end.
sourire.

"The quartermaster wrestles with a sail, a job made more difficult because he is a third drunk and one sheet to the wind. If he'd carried on drinking he'd have been half cut; if you ever go to sea you have to have a good grip on your fractions! I doodled the sailor while number crunching at work one day and never got around to using him - he languished in the doldrums that is the trash can archive section I now call the ideas attic.
The flying fish I was trying to draw from memory - I now it's on an album cover or something but even that I can't remember! It's more of a flying marlin. Umbrellas are a subconscious symbol as any doodlist will know. The torn paper is a copy of my 3H blog which I inadvertently printed off at work - I don't know how it happened, I must have clicked a shortcut key with a fat thumb or something. Luckily it flagged up that it was printing the entire blog and luckily it was only the one copy! Computers will be the death of me."

"I’m entering a quilt I made a couple of years ago. When I was making the quilt, I searched for fabric with a coffee bean print, but I couldn’t find any anywhere. So, not being one to give up easily, I poured coffee beans on the scanner, scanned them, and made my own fabric by printing the scan onto cotton fabric made for an inkjet printer. I must warn you, dear reader, if you try this at home, please put a sheet of transparency, acrylic or glass between the coffee beans and the scanner bed. I no longer have that scanner. Enough said?"

"mmmm, i love coffee and this week's theme word and the fabulous pics from tonx's collection of latte art had my mind brewing with ideas, but in the end i decided to go for a realistic-looking piece to help with my new year's resolution to draw or sketch daily (so far so good!)"

and can you believe this one?!!
"Coffee leads men to trifle away their time, scald their chops, and spend their money, all for a little base, black, thick, nasty, bitter, stinking, nauseous puddlewater."

"If how you drink your coffee says anything about you - here's what I'd say: Lattes are for nannas.
Feeling fuzzy?
Hit the caffeine.
Light on the milk, otherwise why bother.
For a pure caffeine hit order a macchiato, doppio, or ristretto.
If one must adulterate with too much dairy products, go the whole hog and make it an affogato!
How do you drink your coffee?
ps: instant doesn't count!
pps: yep, I'm a coffee snob :)"

"LATTE! There's no way I wouldn't be inspired by my favorite beverage and the source of my family's livelihood. So instead of cleaning, shopping, planning or fretting, I made art. Ahhhh...it does the body good. Just like a nice hot latte.
My piece is a 4x4 mixed media collage done on watercolor paper. The quote reads "The smell of the coffee wrapped its charms around her like the hot breath of a Latin lover." I can so relate."

1 commentsTopic #35--"Graffiti" Entry
From Amanda!:
"I have taken a small section of a photo and worked with it in Photoshop to create a totally different digital art work. This is the first time I've done this, rather than work with a photo using filters and adjustment levels to digitally "process" the image.
This is the original image with the subject's face blacked out as she was just someone in the street, and I don't want to invade anyone's privacy. For my piece I selected the large graffiti in white, the darker graffiti to the right of the woman's head and the blue patch of paint, presumably covering something obscene. I also chose the layers of chipped paint on the right hand bottom corner of the wall.
I moved all these components over into a new document and began to play. I knew I wanted softer colours because I wanted to reduce the harsh masculine look that I think graffiti has. In the end I came up with something I am reasonably happy with. My main criticism comes from the fact that I utilized the magic wand to choose sections of the image to then fill with colour. This tool is one of my favourites, except that it actually selects on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Even with some blur this is still visible to my eye, and other than actually going in to the areas with the paint brush, I don't know how to fix it. I am thinking of posting this over at the Photoshop Support Group on Flickr to see if anyone can help me out. "

Topic #35--"Graffiti" Entry
Welcome to Silver! His entry (be sure to check out his blog for the full post)!:
"Hm, well, I don't do graffiti in the dictionary sense of "drawing or writing on public property," and I don't even live in an area with an active graffiti base of that nature. So I thought I'd have to pass on this week's topic, but as the first submissions were posted on the site, I realized I only had to (pardon the term) think outside the box...or beyond the concrete wall, as it were. It dawned on me that much of my collage art and even my layer-painted paper is somewhat similar to graffiti in that so much of it is built up in layers, one layer working over the top of a previous and sometimes cancelling out what had come before. I really enjoy that grunge style. So leaning on that sense of the term, I hereby jump into Artwords with this graffiti-styled altered book spread which I call "Finish Line."

end war & fly : felt pen, paintshop, photo montage
When my brother and I built the first man-carrying flying machine we thought that we were introducing into the world an invention which would make further wars practically impossible. (Orville Wright, 1917)
"It's a reworking of an old collage I knocked together in the old '20six' blogging days to illustrate a post about a walk, but this time I'm using my own graffiti. I couldn't think what to write; my rebel days are over! Then I discovered the bloke I'd selected for the old montage was one of the Wright Bros., so a quote about flying might be good.
I just hope I don't get to stand in the corner of class in Street Art School on my first day! I'd see it everyday in London but these sticktowns don't go in for it much so the internet came in handy. I heard there were tags and things but most of it that isn't Banksy looks similar, I'm guessing here but I think the style evolved from a need for speed and the controllability factor of aerosol. But it was fun."
The 'office' door was my own photo taken in the derelict part of gloucester docks, the wall was extruded from this image using paintshop. I only used one brother before as it was a loner's walk but here they are together, Orville and the other one...Wilbur!

"Twilight thought for today, our possesions do not bring peace into out lives.....true, for me memories create far more peace for me, I love the 67-70`s era. The spirit of that time was so good, a lot of my work is influenced by that period. Graffiti elephant is part of my late 60´s work. Graffiti works well in the right places."

"I struggled with coming up for a submission this week. Everyday I planned on heading to our downtown area to look for graffiti on the older buildings but something would come up, a playdate for Olivia or rain.
So...This morning I remembered a photograph I had taken at least ten years ago, black and white film, manual 35mm Nikon. After going through the closets I found her-My mannequin head photo! I always knew someday I would do something with her. She has been with me through many moves...Atlanta, New Jersey and several places in Virginia. She is a large print-8x10 on 11x14 paper so not easy to stuff in a drawer.
After I scanned her in I tried to think of inspirational things I tell myself and then using different fonts in Photoshop I placed type over her face and gave her green eyes.
In case this would be helpful...I downloaded a bunch of new fonts last night."

"I really find these quite soothing and fun to do while I’m sitting in front of the tv. I don’t feel quite as bad for letting my brain rot in front of the tube when I’m doing these. And, really, they’re done using some of my favorite products - Sakura’s Gelly Roll, Soufflé, and Permapaque pens. Since I don’t have to worry about the pen’s lightfastness, or whether it’s going to work, I am able to really enjoy the process."

"This is a photo I took of the back of a building in Fremont, and then added a bit to it. Now that I'm looking at it, I'm thinking of the oft-quoted Goethe:
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”
